Hearing Aid Batteries

Heights Audiology & Hearing Aids provides plenty of tips to help with picking the right battery. There are a lot of choices, but only one type that is the right fit for your hearing aid. Choose carefully, as a good battery makes a huge difference in how your device operates.

Sizes

There are four noninterchangeable sizes for hearing aids. From smallest to largest, they are sizes 10, 312, 13 and 675. Each size has a distinct color tab to further identify its general use. Your hearing aid will come with instructions on battery insertion and replacement. When the wrong hearing aid battery is purchased, don’t force it into the device. This can cause permanent damage to your hearing aid and its accessories. To optimize every battery use, only change out your old battery when it is depleted or damaged.

Zinc-Air

Zinc-air is the most common type of battery available for hearing aids. As the standard hearing battery, it can last up to an average of 22 days. With modern technology, that number goes even further with moderate power saving settings. Before inserting a new zinc-air battery, the colored tab will need to be removed. This keeps the battery from discharging power, and also acts as a clue to the type of battery you’re installing. Once the protective seal is removed, the battery can’t be turned off since it is active. That is why it’s important to never remove the seal until you have everything set up for the full changeover.

Rechargeable

A few notable hearing aids use rechargeable batteries that don’t require changing. This is a huge benefit, and the included docking station recharges the device in a small amount of time. With heavy use, rechargeable batteries can last up to five years before seeing a significant impact in their max power. By that time, the user will already be looking at new and potentially better hearing aids.

As an added benefit, rechargeable batteries are paired with software optimizations. Based on individual use, a full battery can go beyond 24 hours before it needs to sit in the docking station.

Storage and Safety

Batteries should never be left out in the open where children or pets can reach. They should always be kept out of extreme heat or cold. Don’t insert zinc-air batteries that are already active when you remove them from the package. Carrying backup batteries is recommended as long as they stay in a cool, dry place.
